We’re often asked by our customers what the most popular ovens we sell are, and the Igneus Classico always makes the shortlist. Whether or not it’s the right oven for you fully depends on your individual needs and requirements for an outdoor pizza oven, but we think it’s up there with the best pizza ovens available across the whole market. In this blog, we take a look at the Classico and what makes it one of our ‘hero products’. Let’s dive in.
Design and Build
The first thing to mention is the build quality of the Igneus Classico. It’s handmade in Portugal, and does a superb job of combining functionality with a sleek design. The outer shell of the Classico is made from stainless steel and powder-coated aluminium, meaning it’s as strong as it is weather resistant, so there’s never an excuse to not fire up the pizza oven – even in winter! It’s also available in four distinctive colourways too, so you can contrast it with your existing colour scheme.
When we talk about the Classico’s high level of functionality, we mean it! It has an internal cooking area of 60×60, which gives enough space to cook two pizzas simultaneously – perfect for larger families and those who like to host. It’s also wide enough to fit two roasting trays sides by side, so you’re never limited to just pizza.
The Igneus Classico feels robust. Weighing in at 45kg, it’s not the lightest pizza oven on the market, but with the firebricks removed, that weight drops to just 20kg, so it’s easy enough to reposition around the garden. It should be mentioned that the Classico wouldn’t be classed as portable – so if that’s what you’re after, you’d be better looking at another model which you could find here.
Performance
Now onto the serious subject of performance, and the Igneus Classico certainly packs a punch. Being solely wood-fired, it takes around 15-20 minutes to build the fire and get up to full operating temperature (for pizza) of around 450°C. So, while not as convenient as gas – with a couple of practice goes, fire management is easy and straightforward. It also maintains its temperature really well, too, owing to superior insulation – so you’re not having to constantly add fuel to the fire just to cook 4-5 pizzas.
The Igneus Classico has a built-in temperature gauge too, so you’ll always know the working temperature of the oven. We always recommend buying an infrared thermometer, too, though, so you can accurately assess the temperature of the firebricks.
What’s it like to cook on?
The big one. It’s one thing having an oven that looks great in your garden, but if it doesn’t do the business in cooking restaurant-quality pizzas, then what’s the point? We’re pleased to report that the Igneus Classico is no slouch when it comes to cooking performance. It’s also great fun to use. Right from building the fire to launching the pizzas – it does a wonderful job of making food fun. It turns mealtimes into an event that your friends and family can get involved with, and the kids love experimenting with toppings and devouring all the pizza – much better than being stuck in front of the TV! Once you’ve mastered the art of making great pizza and cooking with fire, it’s an incredibly satisfying oven to use, and the feeling of cooking with fire is authentic as it is rewarding.
Final Verdict
Overall, the Igneus Classico is a true powerhouse of a pizza oven, to rival those of the perhaps more recognisable brands such as Ooni and Gozney. It’s the perfect oven for those who want to cook using a real wood fire, and don’t care so much about the convenience element of gas. It’s fast to heat, built to last, and delivers restaurant-quality results, all from your own back garden.
