If you’re reading this article, the likelihood is you’ve invested in a pizza oven, giving you the ability to cook restaurant-standard pizza in your own garden, as well as a whole host of other amazing dishes. Just like any other piece of equipment, it needs a little care and attention to keep it in tip-top condition, especially as the cold weather draws in.
Over winter, if left exposed to rain and frost, damp can cause problems for your pizza oven that could hit you in the wallet further down the line. Fortunately, protecting your pizza oven is easy. With the right cover and the correct choice of storage, your oven will be ready to fire up whenever you need it.
Why Protect Your Oven?
Pizza ovens are built to be robust, especially those from the world’s leading brands such as Gozney, Igneus, Clementi and Ooni. However, they’re not invincible when left exposed to the elements over the cold winter months. Stainless steel and powder-coated finishes can resist the weather to a degree, but constant exposure to rain, frost, and fluctuating temperatures can eventually cause damp to settle within the oven, leading to rust and causing the stone floor to expand and contract, which can cause it to crack.

The Importance of a Good Cover
The easiest and most effective way to protect your pizza oven from the elements is with a fitted cover. We always recommend opting for a cover that is specifically designed to fit your particular vehicle rather than a 3rd party aftermarket cover. That’s because they’re designed to fit snuggly around the oven, leaving almost no gaps and therefore less chance of moisture getting in. Not only that, but they’re made from the best quality materials to ensure they’re not only waterproof but also made from breathable fabrics, which prevent condensation from building up underneath (something that can be just as damaging as rain itself!). A high-quality cover acts as a shield against rain, frost, snow, and even UV rays, meaning your oven will be as good as new, even if you leave it untouched throughout the whole winter.

Storage Tips
While a good cover is essential, a quick and easy win is to think carefully about where you store your pizza oven over winter, especially if you don’t plan on using it until the weather warms up (which, of course, you can, just check out our blog: Can you use your outdoor pizza oven in winter? You bet!).
If you can bring your pizza oven indoors, for example, into a garage, shed or outbuilding when it’s not in use, it will add an extra layer of protection from the harsh elements of winter. Portable pizza ovens such as those from Ooni, the Gozney Roccbox and Gozney Tread and the Igneus Minimo, are light enough to move inside without much effort. Larger table-top pizza ovens would benefit from being positioned under a sturdy outdoor shelter, if it’s not possible to move completely inside.
Here are a few quick tips if moving your pizza oven inside isn’t possible.
• Keep your oven under a canopy, pergola, or shelter.
• Store removable parts separately indoors.
• Clean out any ash or food debris before storage.
• Check the oven periodically to ensure no moisture is trapped beneath the cover.
Final Thoughts
Protecting your pizza oven from the weather doesn’t have to be complicated. A fitted cover and some careful thought about winter storage are usually all it takes to keep your oven in great condition. These small steps not only protect your investment but also ensure you’ll be ready to enjoy pizza parties as soon as the warmer days arrive, or even before!
